Vision
Potomac Crescent Waldorf School is devoted to educating children according
Rudolf Steiner's insights and pedagogy. We educate the whole child: head,
heart, and hands. The individual child is at the center of all we do.
In the pre-school we prepare the child for schoolwork by encouraging
healthy play. In the grade school, our teachers aim to allow each child
to grow gradually and naturally into the subjects they study, because
then they will love what they learn. Committed to serve and reflect our
locality of northern Virginia near the District of Columbia, the faculty
work together as colleagues to allow the Waldorf approach to provide
each child with a future-oriented education, in which lasting capacities
and skills will serve the student for life.
Mission
PCWS
realizes its vision through these actions:
~ We educate each individual child according to age and developmental
stage so that learning and growth are united.
~ In each school day our teachers employ the curriculum to address the
child's whole being: the mind, the artistic life, and the physical skills.
~ Our teachers are dedicated to preserving and protecting the innate
senses of wonder and reverence in childhood.
~ We hire Waldorf-trained teachers.
~ We are eager to welcome and serve families of all races, creeds, and
economic levels.
~ As we educate children, we welcome and encourage families to become
involved and participate in our school's governing, fiscal, and social
life.
~ As colleagues we strive to honor
one another's work and gifts and to hold one another to the highest
professional standards in order to create a healthy community of teachers
and administrators around the children we are entrusted with educating.
~
We take seriously the sustainable care of the Earth and of Nature in
the fulfillment of our mission.
Our
History
The
Northern Virginia Waldorf School Initiative was founded in 1998 by a group
of Waldorf teachers and parents seeking to establish a Waldorf school
in northern Virginia. The group met regularly for study and planning
while a site search began in earnest. Its first parent-child classes
were held in private homes. After three years of search, the initiative
was able to rent space in the education wing of the Mount Vernon
Baptist Church, its present location. The school has a wonderful working relationship with the
church.
Our
Community
Enrolling in the Potomac Crescent Waldorf
School is more than sending your child off to school each morning. Parents
are welcomed to the school with the same warmth as their children. This
year, the school enrollment numbers nearly 60 children coming from almost 50 families.
Our parents are active community members, staffing task groups for such
needs as parent and community education, development, outreach, parent
association, and community events. Our handwork group meets weekly to
work on items to sell at our annual Fall Festival, a holiday sale, and
at other venues in the area. A parent room offers a comfortable setting
for these and other gatherings.
Our
School Organization
Potomac
Crescent Waldorf School is a faculty-administered school; all the teachers
on staff participate in making pedagogical decisions and determining
school policy. The Faculty Chairperson serves as a pedagogical resource
and guide for the teachers, and is available to help resolve issues that
extend beyond the class-room level. The Board of Directors, composed
of community members, Faculty, and parents, deals primarily with the
legal and financial matters pertaining to the school.
The school is licensed by
Arlington County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is a member of
the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN) and
has developing school membership in the Association of Waldorf Schools
of North America (AWSNA). Our faculty have extensive Waldorf training.
The school is a non-profit corporation and is an IRS registered charitable
tax-exempt organization. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
The Northern Virginia Waldorf School Initiative (NVWSI) dba Potomac Crescent
Waldorf School does not discriminate by race, color, ethnic or national
origin, or religion in its admissions, administrative, financial aid
or any policies. The school is a non-profit corporation with tax-exempt
status under IRS Code 501 c(3).
Employment Opportunity
Potomac Crescent Waldorf School is seeking a lead teacher for its 3-day a week kindergarten class. The children in the class are ages 3 and 4, and they are usually entering the kindergarten having their first school experience without parents. The teacher we are seeking must have Waldorf teacher training or its equivalent and be able to bring a warm enthusiasm to the early childhood work. PCWS is located in Arlington Virginia, just south of our Nation's Capital. We are fully accredited and a developing member of AWSNA. In addition to the Nursery class we currently offer two Parent-Child classes, a full week Kindergarten, an afternoon program until 3 p.m., and we also offer Grades 1 through 3. We have a strong and dedicated faculty, an active parent body and a committed Board. Our families come from Northern Virginia and parts of the District of Columbia. We have an established anthroposophical community with two other Waldorf schools in the area, one of which continues through high school.
